RIVER NAAB WETLANDS PHOTOGRAPHS

I took these photographs of the River Naab in Schwandorf, Germany during a 2019 Residency at Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus. They are part of my ongoing research for an international project about vulnerable wetlands and climate change.

River levels dropped and tree roots were exposed during the hottest June on record. As the water warmed, duckweed proliferated to form what I have called Îles Flottantes. Although I have entertained myself by comparing these temporary islands to meringue desserts, they are a visible sign of human climate impact.

I worked with some of these images to design The Ephemeral Scrolls, a series of ten digitally-printed scrolls, for an exhibition in St. Augustine’s Tower Hackney.
